About My Quilts

Brita Brown Quilts are created in my home studio tucked away in the Selkirk mountain town of Nelson, British Columbia, Canada. I work in a no pets/non-smoking environment.

I make quilts of all sizes, but many of my clients prefer throw or lap-sized quilts due to their versatility. They add a design element to a home and are just the right size to hang on the wall, tuck into a crib, warm up with on the couch, or to keep handy at the foot of your bed.

I incorporate traditional and modern elements into my quilts, from structured to minimalistic. I also create abstract quilts using unique textiles. Indigo blues always seem to appear my projects.

My prices reflect the fact that I use high quality natural-fibre fabrics, most of which I purchase at my local shop Nelson Stitch Lab. I exclusively use Italian-made 100% cotton thread for piecing and quilting, and each quilt is hemmed by hand.

I make every quilt myself. Each project is a one-of-a-kind labour of love and takes many hours to complete. Please take a browse to see what I have in stock.

I also offer a limited number of made-to-order custom quilts. I look forward to collaborating with you to create something that fits you perfectly. Click here “Get a Quote” to get started. I offer flat rate shipping and you can read my store policies here.

Thank you for taking a look!

About Quilt Sizes

Since improvisation and adaptation is a creative part of quilt-making, quilt sizes fall in to ranges.

Crib/Throw quilts work interchangeably as wall hangings or thrown on a chair. A lap quilt is big enough to snuggle under and share on the couch, and can also be easily hung. Larger bed sized quilts of course can be used on a bed, and although in order to be hung they need more wall-space, they make a big impact as a wall feature. (I have a friend who collects full sized vintage quilts and she has several hanging in various room of her home.)

Please see here various ways to hang a quilt.

About Brita

Artist Statement

After decades of making traditional quilts, I recently joined the Nelson Modern Quilt Guild, where we encourage one another to integrate new techniques into our work. I’m drawn to indigo blue shades and lately am inspired by a Japanese aesthetic.

I cut fabrics using a rotary cutter and ruler, and then stitch the pieces together with my sewing machine. I quilt the layers together by machine, although occasionally I integrate slow-work hand-stitching, using a needle and heavier sashiko cotton thread.

I find comfort when I retreat to my studio to create textured, rustic designs with natural fibre textiles. To me, quilts represent not only physical, but emotional warmth. Therefore I feel deep satisfaction when my quilts are enjoyed by others.

Artist Bio

Originally from the prairies, I have lived in Nelson, British Columbia, together with my husband Peter wince we were married, 42 years ago. Peter has a keen eye and is the one I call upon when I grapple with a design or colour decision.

We are close to our wonderful son, daughter-in-law, and 2 young granddaughters who live nearby. They, naturally, are recipients of several of my quilts.

I retired 6 years ago from a career in administration in the fields of law, health, education, and public safety. I feel fortunate to be personally and creatively stimulated in this beautiful, vibrant community.
